GPS Govt Provides Clear Direction Towards 2030, Beyond: Premier

LAWAS, Sun: The GPS government has provided a clear direction for Sarawak to move forward towards  becoming an economic powerhouse in the region in the decades ahead, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg said today.

He said when he took over office from the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem he envisaged changing Sarawak’s economic landscape to one that was unconventional through digitalisation.

It was lucky for Sarawak to have  embraced digitalisation earlier though some quarters were skeptical of the move only to realize how useful was digitalisation during the covid-19 lockdown, he pointed out.

The Premier said these when officiating at the launch of Kembara Sarawak Merdeka 60 Tahun here, today.

He told the people that the pandemic had prompted the GPS government under his leadership to formulate a recovery plan through the PCDS 2030 in order to keep Sarawak on track to become a developed economy with high-income by 2030.

Under PCDS 2030 he said emphasis was given to chart Sarawak’s future to become a sustainable economy in line with ESG principles.

In line with this focus Sarawak leveraging on its huge resources had embarked on exploring its Carbon Capture and hydrogen economy potentials, the Premier pointed out.

In addition, Sarawak was also quite ahead of other states in bio-research that had resulted in the development of algae to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Currently, the State through Sarawak Energy, Biodiversity Centre and SEDC Energy was partnering with Petronas, Japanese entities and Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC) to develop Sarawak’s algae potential.

He expressed confidence that Sarawak’s future was bright with its emphasis on the development of renewables as part of the climate change action.

He said various bank officials from outside Sarawak that had come to see him recently had expressed trust in Sarawak’s strength to be an economic powerhouse in the region under the GPS government in not too distant a future.

He expressed his sincere hope that the people of Sarawak would continue to be united regardless of race or religion to develop the State to stay true to the 60th anniversary celebration theme “Sarawak maju makmur”.

Earlier, Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hassan also spoke.
